There may be careful allusions to the classics and a lot of convincingly integrated research, but the main quality of the story is that it's highly enjoyable. Strong characterisation and well judged humour - and pathos - just show how rare they are in modern fiction. A proper good read.

  1. I read your recommendation (70%!) for Observations, so decided to read it. I enjoyed it but once the ghost issue started to become so central, I lost interest and scanned through to the end. Good setting though and written realistically. The author does not seem to have written another book...
